THE USE OF BOARD GAMES TO ENHANCE PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN'S PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS IN MATHEMATICS

The supervision of a few academic works of experimentation of an approach to young children mathematics education through the use of board games. These works were based on a mathematics education principle of problem solving as the main learning experience children should be offered.

Typically, teachers would, for any of the board games, follow a path of:

  1. Teaching the rules Informal summary: Through the last 10 years the author has been involved in of the game;
  2. organize informal sessions of play;
  3. organize a competition in the class;
  4. present problems in the context of the game.
The board games that were so far experimented were: chess, draughts, chess draughts, dots and boxes, mastermind. The results of these experiments and following discussion are presented and several recommendations are brought up.
