Representations of board games in the ancient Near East and their significance

Struck in the first place by the coexistence of the notion of fate and the practice of games of chance in ancient Near-Eastern societies, I have sought to find clues in archaeological sources which might clarify this paradox. Basing myself on the ornamentation of gameboards, on illustrations which use games as allegory, and on the rare written documents which have survived, I have attempted to reconstruct its symbolic structure. This study thus attempts to reconstruct a world without chance, in which every sign could be interpreted by the initiated as a message from the gods, and which enthousiastically played board games based on the use of dice. In fact this activity developed to the point of constituting one of the characteristic traits of the societies in question. Consequently, to make up for the insufficiency of the documentary sources, I have looked at related sources to find material allowing us both to evaluate the role of the large families of board games played in the Near East and their incorporation into abstract theoretical models of reality.
